The uniqueness of Italy, the huge artistic heritage and the breathtaking landscapes, are among the finest treasures of our country. When one thinks usually cities of art, archaeological finds, landscapes for postcards, churches and historical buildings spring to mind. They are tangible resources, easy to identify, and present in everyone's imagination. Not as obvious, but still fundamental for our cultural identity, is the intangible heritage. Part of this are all those traditions passed down from generation to generation through voices and gestures: languages and dialects, social practices, rituals, festivals and ceremonies, music, dance, theatre, artistic performances, knowledge, perceptions, handicraft methods and techniques. Difficult elements to classify but in constant interaction with each other and with tangible heritage, constitutes the keystone to elaborate the many Italian local identities.
